Robert F. Kennedy Jr: Some Facts About Independent Candidates of Presidential Election 2024

Robert F. Kennedy Jr

Independent Candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr

Independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. believes Americans are weary of polarisation and a lack of feeling heard in the upcoming 2024 election. Kennedy, a prominent environmental attorney and the son of a prominent Democrat talks with Amna Nawaz about his nomination.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is a presidential candidate for the independent Democratic Party. Can he even expect any votes?

Robert F Kennedy Jr – the anti-vaccination campaigner, environmental lawyer, and member of America’s most renowned political dynasty – is running for president as an independent. Even if he has no shot of becoming president, he might still swing a tight election.

“If it becomes a choice between Trump and Kennedy, that’s a callous question,” Sherri Guoan asserts. “In a perfect world, I would love for them to run together.”

Mrs. Guoan and her husband, Brandon, visited Mr. Kennedy in Lansing, Michigan, for over an hour on a Saturday.

Mr. Guoan identifies as an “old school Democrat,” specifically a “Kennedy Democrat.” However, in 2020, both members of the marriage supported Donald Trump.

Although Mrs. Guoan believes that “Trump is very controversial and I think the country could use a fresh start,” she claims she would never vote for Joe Biden because he is “the worst president this country has ever had.”

The BBC spoke to dozens of voters in a diverse audience of a few hundred in Lansing. They suggested several ways a Kennedy campaign may affect the election.

Will supporting Kennedy affect Biden or Trump in the election?

The announcement shows how far apart Mr. Kennedy’s ideals and the current Democratic Party are. For example, he disagrees with the majority of Democratic leaders in his profound mistrust of vaccinations and the urge to help Ukraine.

Elon Musk; Short Life Story of the Boy Who Change The World

While Mr. Kennedy has spent most of his career as an environmental lawyer, his charity, Children’s Health Defence, gained significant attention and money during the COVID outbreak for promoting skepticism and misinformation regarding immunizations.

His hallmark issue is more prevalent among Republican primary voters than Democratic ones. In a three-way contest, Mr. Kennedy Jr. would take voters’ attention away from Donald Trump more than Joe Biden, according to a recent survey financed by a political action group supporting the Kennedy campaign. But a separate poll by Ipsos and Reuters found the exact reverse.

On Saturday, Kennedy stopped a campaign in Michigan, focusing on the environment, the economy, and his family’s political legacy rather than vaccinations.

“People feel that the system is disintegrating,” according to him. Communities are being ripped apart in many ways, both monetarily and in terms of mental and physical well-being.

The Unaccounted-for External Variable

According to Melissa Smith, author of Third Parties, Outsiders, and Renegades: Modern Challenges to the Two-Party System in Presidential Elections, “a third-party candidate can attract people who aren’t interested in the other candidates; perhaps they did vote in the past, but they felt overlooked.”

Ms. Smith argues that the total influence of an independent candidate is complex to determine when looking at the raw vote statistics, even years after an election.

Georgia, the next closest state, was determined by fewer than 12,000 votes in 2020. More than 60,000 Georgians voted for Jo Jorgenson and the Libertarian Party ticket. Joe Biden lost Wisconsin and Arizona by smaller margins than the Libertarian vote.

It’s impossible to say whether those votes would have gone for Trump or Biden if a third party hadn’t been an option.

According to Ms. Smith, more than most voters’ discontent with the two major parties is needed to make them consider independent and third-party candidates.

Mr. Kennedy faced an obstacle unique among others who have attempted to upend the two-party system. Mr. Trump has already remade the Republican Party in his populist image, so there is less room for maneuvering now that he has staked out the anti-establishment outsider position.

Mr. Kennedy’s position on vaccinations, which has been at odds with the scientific establishment for years, may be one area in which he differentiates himself from the other contenders, even though he is now avoiding concentrating on it.

Ms. Smith claims that Mr. Kennedy “trades in conspiracy theories, and that’s what’s going to attract some people,” even though Mr. Trump has peddled lies about massive election fraud.

Many in attendance on Saturday saw Mr. Kennedy’s anti-vaccination stance as a selling point. Some people brought up old, disproven claims that vaccinations cause autism in children. In contrast, others stated their opposition to government or corporate vaccination mandates.

We do not deny the benefits of immunizations. There’s no judgment on our part. Jacob Kostecke, a student seen wearing a Kennedy T-shirt who plans to enter the medical industry, explained that they wanted to ask questions about the former president and his family.

“He’s just trying to keep an open mind and bring us together, where I feel like everything’s just so divided and so political right now.”

Childhood & Early Learning

Robert F. Kennedy Jr

Robert Francis Kennedy was born to Ethel Skakel Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy on January 17, 1954, in Washington, DC. He is the nephew of John F. Kennedy and Ted Kennedy, two past presidents of the United States.

He is one of Robert F. Kennedy’s 11 children with his wife, Ethel. His father was the late senator for New York’s Democratic Party and attorney general of the United States.

The value of learning and participating in one’s community was drilled into Kennedy from a young age.

In 1976, Kennedy earned a bachelor’s degree in American history and literature from Harvard University after attending the London School of Economics and Millbrook Academy in Gloucestershire, England.

He then earned a master’s degree in environmental law from Pace University and a doctorate in law from the University of Virginia. During his time as New York’s assistant district attorney in 1983, he also managed to pass the written section of the bar exam on his second try.

The drug possession charge he received at the South Dakota airport caused him to abandon his fledgling law profession. He pled guilty to a criminal offense.

Community service for Riverkeeper, a nonprofit group working to protect the Hudson River, was ordered as part of his sentence. After volunteering for 1,500 hours, he took the last part of the bar test in 1985. He was appointed the organization’s top lawyer because of his dedication to the cause.

Activism for the Environment

ROBERT F. In the middle of his speech at an environmental demonstration, Kennedy Jr. stands with his arms spread and a sign reading “Stop the pipeline” in front of him. He sports a sharp gray suit, a crisp blue collared shirt, and a bold tie.

Tear of the Clouds LLC, a bottled water firm, was created by Kennedy, Bartle, and Hoving in 1998. After another year of work, he co-founded the Waterkeeper Alliance

to support community efforts to protect local water sources. He joined Mike Papantonio and Sam Seder as co-hosts of Ring of Fire in 2004. The American politics are the main topic of this nationally syndicated radio discussion show.

In the middle of the 2000s, Kennedy focused on boosting the use of renewable energy and urging the public to take care of their local water supplies.

We’re thrilled to share that Time magazine awarded him the title of “Hero for the Planet” in May 2010 for his incredible contributions to the Hudson River cleanup effort through Riverkeeper.

Kennedy has written extensively on environmental concerns, including two books and several articles. He was the Natural Resources Defence Council’s top lawyer for a long time.

At the 2016 Standing Rock Sioux Reservation protests against the Dakota Access Pipeline, he was one of hundreds of participants. He was also critical of the deployment of armed police to disrupt peaceful protesters.

Kennedy said, “We proudly stand in solidarity with the resilient people of Standing Rock. We admire the Sioux Nation’s brave efforts to protect our nation, humanity, and democracy.

“Environmental and public health hazards are disproportionately experienced by communities of color across the country. This landmark demonstration of clean water demonstrates the power of nonviolent direct action.

In 2017, after 33 years with Riverkeeper, Kennedy left as head counsel and board member, citing a long commute from the West Coast and other obligations as reasons for his departure.

After serving as president of Waterkeeper Alliance for three years, he resigned in November 2020 “to devote himself, full-time, to other issues.” Since its inception in 1999, he has served as president of the Waterkeeper Alliance, expanding its network to over 350 chapters in 48 nations.

Controversies and Achievements

Controversies and Opposition to Vaccination

Robert F. Kennedy Jr

  • While Kennedy insists that his children and himself have all received vaccinations, he has recently become an outspoken opponent of vaccines. He has been the subject of controversy for his claims that vaccines cause autism. He is against using thimerosal as a vaccine preservative because he thinks the government is hiding the truth about the harm it does to children. Studies on the safety of vaccinations containing thimerosal have not shown any negative consequences.
  • Kennedy supported the release of the film Trace Amounts in April 2015, which echoes his opinions. The following year, he established Children’s Health Defence. This nonprofit organization advocated against vaccination and was formerly known as the World Mercury Project. During the COVID-19 epidemic, the organization gained popularity. Still, in August 2022, Meta blocked its accounts on Facebook and Instagram for propagating false information. In February of 2021, Kennedy’s personal Instagram account was suspended.
  • He has apologized for remarks he made years ago that drew comparisons between the impact of vaccines and government mandates and the Holocaust and Nazi Germany. His words have been extensively denounced, including by his own family members.
  • COVID-19 discriminates against some people groups while protecting others: Kennedy Jr. was caught on camera telling fellow diners that “Covid-19 is targeted to attack Caucasians and Black people” and “the people who are most immune are Ashkenazi Jews and Chinese,” according to a video made public in the New York Post, which also shows him saying the U.S. “put hundreds of millions of dollars into ethnically targeted microbes” and labs in Ukraine collected Russian and Chinese DNA “so we can target people by race.”
  • In a recent Twitter Spaces discussion, Kennedy Jr. blamed antidepressants like Prozac for school shootings, telling owner Elon Musk, “Before the introduction of Prozac, we had almost none of these events” (although, as PolitiFact notes, there is no scientifically established correlation between psychiatric drugs and mass violence).
  • While a 2005 postmortem by the Democratic Party found a breakdown in the election system in Ohio, it found no evidence of fraud; Kennedy Jr. said in a Rolling Stone article that he was “convinced” that voter fraud in the 2004 presidential election allowed former Republican President George W. Bush to steal the victory from Democrat John Kerry.
  • Although the federal government’s Warren Commission convened to investigate the killing and found that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone when he shot JFK in 1963, Kennedy Jr. recently suggested to Fox News’s Sean Hannity that the CIA was involved in the assassination.
  • Robert F. Kennedy’s son, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., has cast doubt on the conviction of gunman Sirhan Sirhan in the 1968 assassination of his father, former U.S. Attorney General and Democratic presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy, to which Sirhan Sirhan confessed days later. However, in recent years, Sirhan Sirhan’s attorneys have claimed that he was hypnotized and coerced to kill Kennedy.
  •  “Democrats were getting more money from pharma than Republicans. Democrats are receiving donations from the pharmaceutical industry: Even though Kennedy Jr. claimed on Twitter Spaces that after the Affordable Care Act of 2010, “Democrats were getting more money from pharma than Republicans,” an analysis by STAT News found that 23 of the country’s largest drug companies and 2 pharmaceutical trade organizations have favored Republicans in 14 of the past 16 elections from 1990-2020.
  •  “Take away anyone’s guns.”The prevalence of gun ownership in Switzerland mirrors that in the USA: Kennedy Jr. made the false claim while campaigning for president, promising not to “take away anyone’s guns.” This is even though the United States has the highest rate of firearm ownership in the world, at 120.5 firearms per 100 people, compared to 27.6 in Switzerland, as reported by the Small Arms Survey from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva.
  • COVID-19 was a genetically engineered virus; he wrote on Twitter Spaces, “Covid was clearly a bioweapons problem,” echoing the rhetoric of some far-right legislators. U.S. intelligence agencies have speculated that the virus may have resulted from a laboratory accident but have found no evidence to support the claim that it was intentionally released.
  •  Advocate for the use of unlicensed remedies for Covid-19, such as ivermectin. Dr. Anthony Fauci, a former White House medical advisor, and Bill Gates, a co-founder of Microsoft, worked together to try to hype up the epidemic so that more people would get vaccines. In his 2021 book The Real Anthony Fauci, John F. Kennedy Jr. accused his father and namesake of attempting “a historic coup d’état against Western democracy” by using their considerable influence in the media and public health to advocate for the use of unlicensed remedies for Covid-19, such as ivermectin.
  • For years, Kennedy Jr. has advocated the theory that the preservative thimerosal, which has been largely phased out of modern vaccine formulas, appears to be responsible for a rise in autism diagnoses and that the government knew, but “The actions of the pharmaceutical business were intentionally permitted to adversely impact a whole cohort of youngsters in the United States,” he wrote in Rolling Stone and Salon in 2006. This is despite consensus among several certified health organizations.

These legal disputes occurred in many states, including North Carolina, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Ohio, Oklahoma, and Maryland.
  7. In the year 2001, Kennedy was apprehended for engaging in a demonstration against the United States military testing activities inside the fishing seas of Puerto Rico. As a consequence, Kennedy was incarcerated for 30 days. This incident ultimately led to the cessation of the Unitpractices’ practice of bombing Puerto Rican waters, which had been causing instances of cancer due to uranium exposure and hazardous spills.
  8. In 2007, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. successfully obtained a jury decision of $396 in favor of rural towns in West Virginia. These villages had been adversely affected by the presence of Zinc contamination originating from a chemical facility operated by DuPont.

Their participation was a powerful display of solidarity and commitment to protecting our planet’s natural resources. The purpose of this protest was to express opposition to the Dakota Access Pipeline, which traversed indigenous territories and posed a significant risk to the principal water supply of the Tribe.
  14. In the year 2017, Kennedy undertook legal action against Monsanto, representing impoverished agricultural communities and migrant laborers who had contracted non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma as a result of their exposure to the insecticide Round-up.
  15. In 2018, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. successfully obtained a settlement amounting to $670 million. This settlement was intended to address the needs of Ohio and West Virginia towns lacking resources. These areas had been affected by the contamination of their drinking water due to the presence of C8, a chemical compound resulting from the improper disposal and discharge of industrial waste.
  16. In addition, Kennedy initiated legal proceedings against Columbia Gas Company in 2018 due to its poor maintenance of pipelines, which resulted in explosions occurring in three communities located north of Boston.
  17. As of December 2022, the legal proceedings involving Monsanto, which have been the focus of RFK Jr.’s efforts over the previous ten years, have resulted in a total compensation of $11 billion for individuals such as farmers, migrant workers, day laborers, and families who have been exposed to the chemical RoundUp.

Campaign for the Presidency, 2024

Robert F. Kennedy Jr

On April 6, 2023, Kennedy submitted a declaration of candidature for the 2024 presidential election, hoping to carry on his family’s tradition of public service. He is running for president as a Democrat. Kennedy reportedly began his leave of absence as chairman and principal legal counsel of the Children’s Health Defence on April 2, only days before he filed.

Kennedy has never hidden his desire to enter politics. During a 2007 interview with Oprah Winfrey, he confidently shared that fatherhood played a significant role in his decision to forgo running for government.

In response to Winfrey’s inquiry about whether he had ever considered running for president, Kennedy responded, “If opportunities came up for me to run for office, I would probably do it.”

Issues with the Law

Kennedy has had some minor run-ins with the law. He was arrested for marijuana possession in Massachusetts when he was a teenager and given 13 months of probation.

On a trip to Rapid City, South Dakota, in September 1983, at the age of 29 years, Kennedy was detained after apparently overdosing on drugs. At the airport, authorities grabbed his bags and found “a small amount”—reportedly 183 milligrams—of heroin.

Soon later, he checked into a drug rehab center in New Jersey. In exchange for his guilty plea, Kennedy was given two years of probation, drug testing and treatment, and community service.

The arrest was later removed from his permanent record via expunction. He reported 23 years of sobriety in a 2007 interview.

ROBERT F., a police officer, is seen in profile leading Kennedy Jr., protesting climate change, out of the United States Capitol building as demonstrators seated on the floor in the background praise him.

Decades later, in 2001, he and many others—including Al Sharpton and Jacqueline Jackson, the wife of Jesse Jackson—were convicted of trespassing during a protest against U.S. Navy bombing operations on Vieques Island in Puerto Rico.

Kennedy did 30 days behind bars. In 2019, he was detained at the U.S. Capitol during a climate change demonstration organized by actor Jane Fonda.
