Producer Discusses Daryl Dixon’s Comparison to “The Last of Us” in “The Walking Dead”
Daryl Dixon is crafting its own story while sharing a premise with HBO’s smash The Last of Us.
“The Last of Us” in “The Walking Dead”
Suppose you enjoyed HBO’s previous adaptation of The Last of Us. In that case, you might find the premise of The Walking Dead spinoff Daryl Dixon all too familiar, as it follows the titular character as he guides a youngster through a zombie-infested, apocalyptic world populated by threats both undead and human.
In a new interview, Greg Nicotero, executive producer of Daryl Dixon, addressed the similarities and assured fans that the spinoff would be distinct from TLOU.
“We were already deep into production when The Last of Us came out,” Nicotero recently told Entertainment Weekly.
“I saw the pilot episode and was like, ‘Ummm… guys?'”
After considering the finer points, he concludes that there isn’t enough of a parallel between the shows to cause alarm and that he “enjoyed The Last of Us tremendously.”
Nicotero says, “It’s really a continuation of Daryl’s story,” referring to the show’s most recognisable character, Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus), who has starred in every episode since the show premiered in 2010.
Although he is eager to hand over the kid, it is not his main objective. His goal is to return to his family and friends. He must contact Judith, Carol, and Commonwealth officials.
He was tricked into taking a side trip to France. The concept that he forms a bond with the youngster reminds me of The Last of Us, but the journey itself is very different. It’s possible to appreciate both, as Nicotero puts it.
The idea for the story with Daryl as the protagonist dates back six years. However, the initial idea had him visit a different United States location. Daryl and his relationships with the other characters remain the show’s central focus.
“In each episode, he would come into contact with people who would change his life, and he would change their life,”
explains Nicotero. And from there, the idea for the show was born. It was a subject about which Norman felt deeply… If it was going to be more of the same, none of us cared to participate. Norman has no interest in doing so. It wasn’t anything I wished to do.
The Walking Dead is the sixth TV series to take place in Robert Kirkman and Tony Moore’s Walking Dead universe. On September 10, the show will premiere on AMC and AMC+.
Season 2 of The Last of Us Has Hired Abby
When the current Hollywood strikes conclude, filming on The Last of Us Season 2 may begin, and it will feature the introduction of the divisive new character Abby. Craig Mazin, the showrunner, verified to The Los Angeles Times that the post had been filled.
Without an official announcement, fans have speculated that Shannon Berry (The Wilds, Hunters) will play Abby in Season 2.
Berry’s Instagram followers include Neil Druckmann, series stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, and the official The Last of Us account. All those people and accounts are already well-known, so this proves little.
Season 2 of The Last of Us will undoubtedly include Abby because it will cover major events from the second video game. Given what happens to her and her role in the story, Abby is a controversial pivotal character in The Last of Us Part II.
Druckmann dispelled fan speculation that Abby appeared in the Season 1 conclusion of The Last of Us.
Season 2 of The Last of Us was scheduled to premiere on HBO in 2025 before the strikes began. As a result of the Hollywood strikes, Season 2 production will likely be delayed, which could cause the launch date to be pushed back as well.
Mazin had earlier expressed optimism that labour would win out in the strikes. The Writers Guild will be happy with the results when this is through. I have no doubt in my mind. The only other option is to do this,” he stated.
Since 1960, this is the first time the writers’ and actors’ guilds have gone on strike simultaneously. Actors at the London premiere of Oppenheimer walked out after a strike was called by SAG-AFTRA. Earlier, in May, the WGA went on strike.
Writers and actors lobby for increased compensation, streaming residuals based on audience, and safety precautions against AI.
Disney Bought the “Too Weird” Pitch for Pirates of the Caribbean That Came From the Writer of “The Last of Us.”
We assumed no one would buy it when we presented it since it was so out there. Indeed, they did.
The upcoming Disney Pirates of the Caribbean film is being written by Craig Mazin, who is most known for his work on HBO’s Chernobyl and The Last of Us. Mazin gave a high-level synopsis of the film to The Los Angeles Times, expressing amazement that Disney had purchased his pitch for such a “weird” movie idea.
We assumed no one would buy it when we presented it since it was so out there. Indeed, they did. “Mazin said.” And then the strike happened, and everyone’s just waiting around, and he wrote a great script.
Mazin and Ted Elliott, who collaborated on the first four Pirates films, penned the screenplay. After 2017’s Dead Men Tell No Tales, this will be the first new instalment in the series.
It has also been speculated that Christina Hodson (Birds of Prey) may rewrite a new Pirates of the Caribbean film to feature Margot Robbie. According to Robbie, Disney has decided against making this film with a “female-led” perspective. The movie may not be completely dead; according to series producer Jerry Bruckheimer, it could come out after the Mazin and Elliott feature.
Johnny Depp is Captain Jack Sparrow in the first two Pirates of the Caribbean films. Still, it is being determined if the divisive actor will reprise the role in future instalments. More than $4 billion was made from the first three Pirates of the Caribbean films.
The high-profile dispute between Depp and his ex-wife Amber Heard was recently concluded in court. Depp was found to have defamed Heard and was compelled to pay $2 million to settle the matter.
The judge fined Heard $10 million. Bruckheimer told The Independent that he has yet to decide whether or not to have Depp return for the next film in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
Season 2 of The Last of Us has been planned; however, filming may be postponed if the ongoing actor and writer strikes in Hollywood continue.
Final Chapter Why Universal Studios’ HHN is a great fit for The Last of Us, according to TLOU’s Neil Druckmann. HHN “captures something the games and TV shows can’t.”
The Last of Us has had a huge year. In 2023, not only did the original game make its way to PC, but the much-loved HBO adaptation also premiered that year. The developers at Naughty Dog, whose games include The Last of Us, still need to be finished, even after the franchise had achieved widespread cultural acclaim.
The Last of Us Finally Made it to the Final Frontier, Halloween Horror Nights.
Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida and the Universal Studios in Los Angeles, California, host annual Halloween Horror Nights events, including haunted mazes themed after well-known movies and television shows.
The Last of Us was accepted this year. However, Universal surprisingly did not make a movie based on the TV series. Instead, the major theme parks have recreated the original game as an interactive attraction.
Here We Go: A Discussion of the First Episode of The Last of Us
The Last of Us attraction at Universal has been in the works for two years after game creator Neil Druckmann expressed interest in having Joel and Ellie’s story told as part of the park’s annual celebrations via Twitter.
Druckmann claimed at a media gathering for Halloween Horror Nights that someone from the parks contacted him within 24 hours to get things going. Fans on both coasts can now experience The Last of Us in a way neither the game nor the show could.
“How Do You Put Into Words the Uniqueness of This Experience?
Druckmann told GameSpot, “You want to put the players in the game. You may counter with, ‘Well, they’re already in the game. They’re pretending to be Joel and activating the camera. They’re making up their minds at the moment.
They do, but it’s framed in two dimensions and hanging on the wall.
What if You Destroyed the Enclosure and They Were Completely Immersed In It?
You could walk through, touch, feel, or even smell it. Furthermore, it’s an entirely new emotional adventure.
Guests can physically interact with the maze’s environments and props before facing an infected person. At the same time, a foul odour fills the air, creating an experience unlike anything possible in a show or game.
However, for Druckmann and his team at Universal Studios, more was needed to reproduce the games’ environments for visitors to explore. Familiar faces were also required.
It’s important to “then add the Joel and Ellie experience and really feel like you’re on a journey with them,” he said, “it felt like you could give them something that they would draw from the game or draw from the show, but have a different kind of experience.”
Druckmann also said that one of his favourite aspects of hosting a labyrinth at Halloween Horror Nights is the “incredibly high production values, and it’s here for this limited time, and then it’s gone.” It’s a unique selling point for diehard fans of The Last of Us because the attraction will only be at the parks on the East and West Coasts this year.
It’s also interesting that the two coastlines didn’t merely share a single maze. When Universal Studios’ theme parks adapt the same works of fiction, it aims to ensure that guests’ experiences at each park are unique.
When asked to elaborate on the differences between the two mazes, Druckmann would only reply, “There’s some amazing stuff that’s only here and some really amazing stuff that’s only there.”
If you enjoyed The Last of Us, you won’t be disappointed with any option. Naughty Dog provided a trove of materials to Universal’s creative team, and game stars Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson recorded new dialogue specifically for Halloween Horror Nights, allowing the theme parks to reproduce the sounds, images, and emotion of the game.
Although you may be aware that zombies don’t exist and that The Last of Us is a computer game, you may still find yourself startled by the sudden appearance of an infected shambling in the shadows or Ellie bursting out from behind a wall, determined to protect you. That was the goal of the partnership between Druckmann and Naughty Dog.
At Naughty Dog, we take the following approach: “Let’s do a few things, and let’s make sure they’re the greatest. They’re great,” he gushed. People had approached us before with ideas for comparable experiences, but they never reached “this level of quality.”
At Universal Orlando Resort and Universal Studios Hollywood, guests may experience Halloween Horror Nights on select nights until Halloween.
